The sad truth of life is that the more life continues on, the more ghosts are created. We all have unfinished business, dreams, hopes, and needs that linger on way past the point when you die. We all have hanging threads that seem insignificant when we’re alive but will bind us like a rope when we die. Unlike how they are presented in the media, most ghosts are harmless, desperately trying to complete an objective even they might have forgotten about. Some may become aggressive but most aren’t doing so maliciously. Even the most deadly ghosts need help and that’s when you come in.

The modern day is filled with ghosts, each doing their best to deal with the endless reality their own regrets or bad circumstances have trapped them within. Some refuse this truth, thinking themselves to still be alive, others might barely act, not knowing how to build themselves back into a force that can interact with those around them. Some act out a routine, their world merely an illusion, a delusion of what they think their afterlife should be. Many believe ghosts are created to hate the living but that can’t be further from the truth, it’s the wait, the years of trying to hold on to who they were, watching their loved ones move on without them, watching their killers live a happy life. After a while, it’s hard to blame some of them for turning to resentment.

As a hunter, your job is simple, find hauntings, discover who they were, what kind of ghost they have become and what their unfinished business was. Once you know these facts, you can decide on the best way to help them to whatever lies beyond. Some may need their unfinished business completed, some might be able to be tricked, and some might need capturing they can’t hurt anyone else ever again. Importantly, you aren’t a warrior, you’re role isn’t to fight these ghosts, they need support, they need your help and compassion. Do whatever you can to move these ghost to whatever lies beyond but make sure you do so whilst being kind.

Finding and investigating hauntings isn’t the only thing to look out for however. The life of a ghost hunter is a dangerous one, a lot of ghost will appreciate your help, some may not. Keep an eye on your own unfinished business, your own hanging threads that might bind you when you die, might turn you into what you dedicated your life to hunting. The ghost of hunters can be some of the most aggressive, the most deadly; so keep an eye on your own physical, mental, and emotional health.

What Haunts Us is a modern day ghost hunting TTRPG, it focuses on the emotional core of hauntings as well as those who investigate them. What Haunts Us encourages looking at these hauntings in a different light, not to focus on how to stop the ghost, but how to help it, even if it isn’t the help it would want. Form a ghost hunting group, investigate local hauntings, and try to survive your many ghostly encounters. Inspiration has been taken from real ghost hunter hobbyists as well as the best ghost-based media from all different genres including horror, comedy, and drama.
